Child Visa Subclass 101 and 802

There are two subclasses for Child visa :

Child Visa (Subclass 101) is for applicants outside Australia when application is made.
Child Visa (Subclass 802) is for applicants inside Australia when application is made.

Both onshore and offshore applications cost the same, and all criteria are the same.

Criteria for the Sponsor (Parent)

You must meet all the following criteria to be eligible to sponsor your child.

  • Sponsor must be an Australian permanent resident, citizen, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • Sponsor must be above the age of 18.
  • Sponsor must be a parent, step-parent or adoptive parent of the child.
  • If the child is adopted, it must have been finalised before the child is of 18 years of age.
  • If the child is the sponsor’s step-child, the sponsor must have guardianship or custody of the child by low of Australia or another country.
  • Sponsor must have good character, and have never been charged or convicted of offences involving children.
  • Sponsor is responsible for all costs involved including but not limited to the cost of this visa and future living expenses.
  • If child is under 18, sponsor must have written consent of any person who can decide where the child will live.

Criteria for the Applicant (Child)

The child  must meet all the following criteria to be eligible to apply for this visa.

  • Applicant must be sponsored by their parent or their parents partner.
  • Applicant must be single.
  • Younger than 18 years of age, OR
  • If applicant is between the age of 18 and 25, the applicant must be a full time student, and must be financially dependent on the sponsor.
  • If applicant is adopted, the child must be below the age of 18 at the time of adoption.
  • If the applicant is 18 and above, but unable to work due to a disability and is dependent on the sponsor.
  • If applicant has siblings, they must lodge their own Child Visa application.
  • The applicant can include their own dependent children in the same application.
  • Applicant must have good character.
  • Applicant must meet all health requirements.

Duration of the visa

This visa is permanent, so the applicant can stay in Australia indefinitely. After 5 years, the applicant must renew their Permanent Residency visa (Resident Return Visa 155)

Cost of Visa

The current visa costs for Child Visa (101/802) is AU$2,665 for the main applicant. Addition fees apply for additional applicants.
